"BUT I WOULD KNOW!"

"Character and Integrity are not defined by that which you do when others are watching but by that which you do when no one is watching." - Joseph Scarcinella

I think the following story gives a wonderful example of the quote above:

For an elderly gentleman to visit his wife in a nursing home he had to go to extraordinary lengths (taking a bus since he no longer drove, etc). The nurses knew that with his wife's severe dementia she no longer recognized him nor did she acknowledge his presence when he came. Nontheless, he came faithfully every day.

One day a nurse, who had noticed how difficult it was for him to make the daily journey, mentioned that he shouldn't feel bad if he missed a day here or there. She reminded him that his wife would never know the difference.

His reply was simple (but profound!). He just said to the nurse: "But I Would Know."

When our actions are that pure; we do the RIGHT THING simply because "we would know" personally if we didn't....that is TRUE CHARACTER!
